We are seeing a surge in cases of influenza, strep throat and severe gastroenteritis (vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration) in the last 2 weeks.
If you come down with a fever, come in to McLean Immediate Care promptly for a proper evaluation. Influenza treatment (Tamiflu) only helps if started in the first 48 hrs.
Strep throat can be quickly treated with a penicillin type antibiotic to get you feeling better soon.
The gastroenteritis going around is suspected to be same norovirus that has led to school closures elsewhere in Virginia. It can rapidly dehydrate you to the point of needing IV fluids or hospitalization. Don’t delay care if you start having vomiting, diarrhea and fever. We can help control the symptoms to prevent dehydration.
Routine hygiene precautions can give you the best protection from all of these illnesses. Wash your hands, use alcohol based hand sanitizer often, don’t touch your nose or mouth, and if you have a fever do not attend school or work. And get a flu shot!! It’s not too late.
